Master Strokes - Kalamkari Artist

Updated: 10 hours ago

Excitement is in the air! Get ready to be part of something extraordinary at Leela Foundation's 3rd annual Master Strokes Visual Art event. It's an event like no other, and we want you to be there!

About Kalamkari Art

Kalamkari is a traditional hand-painted textile art form that has flourished in India for over 2,500 years. Derived from the Persian words kalam (pen) and kari (craftsmanship), Kalamkari literally means “drawing with a pen.” This intricate process involves up to 17 carefully executed steps, using natural dyes sourced from plants, flowers, roots, seeds, minerals, and stones. Known for its detailed storytelling, vibrant motifs, and elaborate depictions of nature, mythology, and the iconic Tree of Life, Kalamkari represents a remarkable blend of artistic expression, technical mastery, and cultural heritage.

About the Artist – A. Thilak Reddy

A. Thilak Reddy is a renowned second-generation Kalamkari master artist from Tirupati, Andhra Pradesh, dedicated to preserving and evolving one of India’s oldest textile traditions. Born into a family of Kalamkari artisans, Thilak chose to return to his father’s artistic legacy after completing his engineering education. Through his work, he combines traditional hand-painting techniques with contemporary design, creating fine art, textiles, garments, and embroidered works that have earned international recognition. As the founder of Indra Neelam, a natural indigo revival initiative, and Silpi Sala Embroidery Unit, he actively promotes sustainable dyeing practices and Andhra Pradesh’s rich craft heritage, bringing ancestral knowledge to modern audiences around the world.
